Off the Shelf and On Display Project Update

ImageUCI Libraries Education and Outreach continues the Off the Shelf and On Display project, which began in February 2017, adding to an expanding list of themes and booklist ideas from librarians, library staff and student groups on campus. Display highlights from the current 2017- 2018 academic year include Hunger and Homelessness Awareness and The Feminist Illuminati.

In the spirit of the UCI Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (November 13- 19, 2017) and #UCFoodforALL, the Off the Shelf and On Display project incorporated a similarly themed book display. UCI librarians and staff curated a booklist that not only focused on the economic environment that leaves such a large population vulnerable to hunger and homelessness, but it also shed a light on the very real, human experience of hunger and homelessness through UCI Libraries' robust collection of autobiographies and ethnographies on this subject.

Then in January 2018, the Libraries collaborated with the UCI student group, The Feminist Illuminati, to curate a display focused on the contemporary issues of gender, sexuality and feminism. The Feminist Illuminati students compiled a comprehensive book list including graphic novels, photography books, poems and short stories and invited Samhita Mukhopadhyay to speak to students at the display opening. Mukhopahyay is currently the executive editor of Teen Vogue and author of "Nasty Women: Feminism, Resistance and Revolution in Trump's America", one of the books featured in the display. This collaborative project was extremely well-received, and represents what the Libraries hope will be the first of many student-curated displays.

ImageNot only does the Off the Shelf and On Display project showcase existing collections, but it also provides an opportunity for a critical review of where collections may be lacking or underrepresenting certain groups. As a result of the book display, new books have been purchased to enhance the inclusiveness and breadth of existing library collections. The UCI Libraries Education and Outreach team looks forward to a continued collaboration between the libraries and campus, including another student-curated display on Chicano/Latino Labor opening in April 2018.

Located just to the left of the main entrance to Langson Library, Off the Shelf and On Display is nestled directly behind the Ask Us Reference Desk. The three-bookcase display can easily host as many as 100 books, and sofa-style seating and large windows near the display provide an excellent environment to leisurely browse and read titles from the selection.
