Dear Friends and Supporters,
The start of the academic year is always an exciting time on campus as students return, new faculty members settle in and the community engages with all UCI has to offer. The UCI Libraries have kicked off the year with great momentum as various projects and programs came to fruition in the early months of the fall quarter.
The year started off with a bang with the implementation of a three year research grant which involves the Libraries partnering with campus ethnic studies departments. Students from four different ethnic studies courses will be engaging in projects to capture and archive the stories of under-documented ethnic communities in Orange County.
Equally exciting news for the Libraries and resident Anteaters comes to us in the form of new/upgraded study areas, including the UCI Libraries Collaboration Zone and the Forest J. and Dolores S. Grunigen Group Study Room. The Collaboration Zone expanded current study space in Langson Library and features several innovations to foster students' collaborative work on projects. For example, students can write on the glass wall or moveable whiteboards providing a greater canvas for big thinking, or they can share their work from laptops or other portable devices on a large screen. The newly named group study room at the Grunigen Medical Library will feature new tech updates and furniture with the generous support from Mrs. Dolores S. Grunigen.
The UCI Libraries has hosted several events during the fall. One event in particular was a bright light among many. On October 11th, 2017 the An family, owners of the Crustacean restaurant in Hollywood and AnQi in South Coast Plaza, joined the UCI Libraries to celebrate their recently published cook book Ăn: To Eat: Recipes and Stories from a Vietnamese Family Kitchen. It was a delicious affair, full of stories, flavors, and fun!
As the UCI Libraries ramps up its involvement with students, creates new study areas, and engages the community, we continue to be passionate about maintaining this energy for the coming academic year and beyond!
