Libraries Partner with UCI Illuminations and School of Humanities on 2017-18 Author Series

ImageA team from the UCI Libraries led by Charla Batey, Communications & Events Officer, is working with Julia Lupton, Faculty Director for UCI Illuminations: The Chancellor's Arts and Culture Initiative, Associate Dean for Research, School of Humanities and Faculty Director, Humanities Commons, School of Humanities, on an author series for the 2017-18 academic year.

The Libraries is the host site for book clubs that feature the titles each guest author will share at a public reading. The club meets one week prior to the respective public reading. UCI School of Humanities faculty members moderate the book club discussions. Additionally, the Libraries created a book display in the New Book Lobby (Second floor, Langson Library) featuring multiple copies of the series titles. These copies are available for check out by faculty, staff, students and community users with library access.

On Oct. 17, the book club kicked off with a discussion of the best-selling young adult novel, "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas led by Professor Johnathan Alexander, Chancellor's Professor of English and Informatics.

The following week on October 26, Angie Thomas delivered a public reading and book signing to over 300 guests in Crystal Cove Auditorium at UCI Student Center.

The series will continue in the new year with UCI alumna Alice Sebold, author of "The Lovely Bones" and "Lucky."

For more information on the series visit the UCI Illuminations webpage here or please contact Charla Batey, MBA, Communications and Events Officer at cbatey@uci.edu.
