Mitchell Brown

The UCI Libraries is pleased to announce that Mitchell Brown, Research Librarian for Chemistry, Earth System Science, and Russian Studies, has been appointed the Libraries Scholarly Communication Coordinator. The new position will coordinate scholarly communication activities on the UC Irvine campus and be involved with projects at the University of California system-wide level.

Scholarly communication is a term used to describe the process of academics, scholars and researchers sharing and publishing their research findings so that they are available to the wider academic community and beyond.  It is increasingly recognized that the current model of scholarly communication has become economically unsustainable, restrictive, and increasingly limited in its ability to make information accessible.

As a result, the UCI Scholarly Communication and Management Program (SCAMP) was established  to facilitate campus-wide collaboration and a community dialogue on a wide range of scholarly communication issues that are impacting teaching and research, such as the changing nature of scholarship in a digital environment; economics of scholarly publishing; preservation of digital assets; and intellectual property rights.

Through Mitchell’s position, the Libraries are providing leadership by offering a forum and facilitating campus discussions on these evolving issues.

Through Mitchell’s position, the Libraries are providing leadership by offering a forum and facilitating campus discussions on these evolving issues.  Mitchell will coordinate activities of SCAMP to highlight and help the university capture its research output, expand access to and increase the impact of its faculties' scholarship, and engage publishers in practical, mutually beneficial ways to evolve copyright sharing and business practices.
