Rebecca Huey

The UCI Libraries awarded two $500 Archival Research Fellowship Awards, to Rebecca Huey and Jennifer Henry. The awards are given to students who submit a completed research paper that was based on extensive archival research in Special Collections and Archives.

Rebecca Huey, the undergraduate student Fellowship winner, submitted the paper "Protest in Practice: The University of California, Irvine's Place in the Anti-Vietnam War Movement from 1965 to 1970." Her paper explores the tactics of resistance employed by students and faculty at several college campuses during the anti-Vietnam War movement. It focuses on the uniquely peaceful and open character of the protests that took place on the UCI campus.

Jennifer Henry, the graduate student Fellowship winner, submitted the paper "The Private City: Irvine (Company), California." Her paper describes privatization of land use regulation in Irvine, California as a descendent of the technique of using private companies to undertake the government function of colonization. Jennifer is in her third year of law school at UCI and holds a B.A. in International Studies from Macalester College.

As part of the award, the recipients' papers were published in the UCI Libraries' instance of eScholarship, in a new series titled Archival Research Fellowship Papers.

The fellowship was established with support from the UCI Medal event, to encourage use of primary source materials in student research. The UCI Libraries collect archival and manuscript materials from significant individuals and organizations to support original research.
