The Libraries' East Asian (EA) Collection, located on the first floor of Langson Library, has successfully applied and received a grant from Korea Foundation (KF) under its support program for Korean Studies e-Resources, and dozens of gift books under the Foundation's Reference Materials Distribution Program.
The KF grant received in March 2016 provides critical matching funding source for the Libraries to continue the subscription of two Nurimedia databases, namely DBpia http://www.dbpia.co.kr and KRpia http://www.krpia.co.kr. Whereas KRpia provides online access to various primary resources on Korean history, DBpia allows fulltext search and access to all the current and back issues of some 1,100 Korean scholarly journals in 12 different subject areas, including arts, literature, theology, media & culture, sociology, economics & business, medical science, law & administration, engineering, natural science, and education. Available online to UCI faculty, staff and students as well as walk-in community users, the two databases have received increasing usage and are highly rated by the Korea studies community on campus, in terms of making their research and education more effective and efficient.
In addition to the grant for e-resource subscription, a batch of 55 gift books (about $2,700 value) were also received from the Foundation. These books are all on our wish list that we submitted to the Foundation in 2015, based upon publications' relevance to Korean studies on campus. Included in this latest batch of precious gift books are the Historical Dictionary of Pyongyang by Justin Corfield, Directory of World Cinema. South Korea by Colette Balmain, Korean-American Stories : Collection of Autobiographies by Ariel Raimundo Choi, The Making of Korean Christianity : Protestant Encounters with Korean Religions, 1876-1915 by Sung-Deuk Oak,재일 조선인 문학 의 주체 서사 연구 : 가족, 신체, 민족 의 상관성 을 중심 으로by 윤 송아, and many more.
With the continued supports from Korea Foundation and other generous donors, the Libraries' print Korean collection has grown from zero in 1990, the year when the EA collection was established, to approximately 14,000 volumes as of June 30, 2016, making it the third largest in the UC system. The collection is heavily used by Korean studies faculty and students at UCI and beyond. The Libraries actively seeks external funding support to enhance its collections to serve campus and local constituents with research and education needs.
