The morning of January 30, 2016, the same day UCI celebrated it most recent Homecoming, the UCI Libraries served as a host to the UCI Parent Leadership Council (PLC) for the first time since the group was formed. The Parent Leadership Council is dedicated group of 22 volunteer parents of UCI students. Members of the council ranged from parents of first year students to alumni.
The meeting was held in the Caroline A. Laudati Conference Room of the Jack Langson Library. I had a wonderful opportunity to speak to the members of the UCI Parent Leadership Council about the important role that the libraries play in the lives of students.
Members of PLC were treated to a screening of a student-produced video entitled, "Same Difference." It compares the day in the life of a student who visits our Libraries and uses its services versus the student who tries to study and do research from home.
They also learned about vital resources such the Multimedia Resources Center, located in the Francisco J. Ayala Science Library, in which students have the opportunity to practice and record presentations and to experiment with 3D printing. Parents also learned about community engagement events hosted by the Libraries, such as the biannual exhibits displayed in the lobby of the Jack Langson Library.
The PLC visit to the Libraries was a great opportunity for parents to learn more about the Libraries-not just as a place for their students to check out books or as a quiet place to study, but rather as a Gateway to Knowledge that helps their students to achieve their goals.
