Libraries' Digital Scholarship Service

The UCI Libraries' recently launched Digital Scholarship Service facilitates the exporting and discovery of all formats of intellectual content. Through this initiative, the Libraries is creating and promoting collections, symposia, and publications that might never have been possible.

The UCI academic community creates more and more digital content that has unique properties. Whereas past work included material that stood on its own in journal articles or books, new digital content may be interactive or re-usable, such as statistical data, or an interactive website. Therefore, the Libraries has designed a new Digital Scholarship Service for UCI researchers and created a workspace on which to store new forms of intellectual content. To boost the likelihood that UCI digital material is found, the Libraries helps researchers create information that describes what is in electronic files, assigns keywords, and opens up that information to search engines like Google.

The UCI Libraries' Digital Scholarship Service facilitates the exporting and discovery of all formats of intellectual content

We have already seen the fruits of our efforts. Last spring, a symposium inspired by the work of UCI philosopher and critical theorist Richard Rorty, Time Will Tell, But Epistemology Won't, explored the implications for discovering, reinterpreting and re-envisioning scholarship. The symposium was based on the word-processed collections of papers and other digital ephemera recently donated to UCI Libraries. The Libraries created descriptive data and a searchable interface which allows for new discovery; as a result, finding the material via widely used search engines, such as Google, continues to generate great interest in Rorty's work.

The partnership between UCI Libraries and researchers is essential because we help to preserve, provide access, and add value to living information. Through the coordinated efforts of scholars and UCI Libraries, Digital Scholarship Services will improve the depth and breadth of knowledge for many years to come.
