Danielle Kane, MLIS, UCI Research Librarian for Emerging Technologies and Service Innovation

On Friday, May 14, 11 am – 1 pm, the Libraries will offer a workshop on Social Networking that will provide instruction on how to use the more popular social networking sites in a safe and enjoyable manner.

Today's youth and young adults are more virtually connected than ever before. Now, people from every generation are discovering the networking, collaboration, and connection that social networking tools can provide. If you feel out of the loop, join us as we explore the exciting world of social networking.

Our presenter is Danielle Kane, MLIS, UCI Research Librarian for Emerging Technologies and Service Innovation. Danielle will focus the first hour on introducing the most popular social networking tools, such as Facebook, Twitter, and some applications from Google. Time to get help creating your own account will be available for those that want to join one of the social networks being introduced. In the second half of the presentation, the group will explore some of the issues that have arisen from the popularity of these tools, such as managing information overload, understanding and managing digital identity, privacy issues, and tips and tricks for using these tools.

As Facebook and other social networks grow, understanding how to effectively use these tools will become inevitable.

"Gartner, a leading information technology research and advisory company, stated that by 2012 Facebook will become the hub for social network integration and Web socialization," said Kane. "As Facebook and other social networks grow, understanding how to effectively use these tools will become inevitable. Understanding the ins and outs, positives and negatives of social networking will create a more enjoyable and safe user experience for you. Please join us!"

The workshop will be held on Friday, May 14, from 11 am – 1 pm in Langson Library's Technology Enhanced Classroom, Room 228. Free and open to the public; space is limited and priority is given to Library Partners. Please RSVP to Terri Bokosky in Library Development at 949.824.4651 or email partners@uci.edu.
