The UCI Libraries are in an exciting period of growth and change. Over the next decade, the UC Irvine campus will continue to experience a significant increase in size, and the Libraries will renovate current buildings and build new facilities to provide a productive and comfortable environment to meet the changing needs of our users who enter library buildings over 2.2 million times last year.

“The UCI Libraries are committed to providing the highest quality research services and resources to our faculty, staff, students and community users,” said University Librarian Gerry Munoff. “We must provide expanded and upgraded space for researchers, library staff, and collections; and enhance our computing capabilities and furnishings.”

Gateway Study Center will undergo a major renovation to accommodate more students.

The Libraries are undertaking projects to reconfigure and renovate existing library space to better serve our current and future users. Projects in progress are updating the quality and comfort of the 3rd and 4th floors of the Langson Library, expanding access to computers, adding more shelving for collections, providing additional seating, and expanding study areas in locations with good natural light and views of Aldrich Park. In addition, a renovation of the Library Gateway Study Center (which is open until 3:00am most nights), includes expansion into parts of the building recently made available for library use, and will significantly enlarge and improve group and individual study areas. Other projects in Langson and Gateway will provide office space for new librarians and staff who are required to support the growing demands for library services. Future projects will relocate the Science Library Loan Desk and the Langson Library Reference Desk to higher visibility areas that are more convenient for our users.

In addition to renovating and expanding physical facilities, extended building and service hours have increased access to the Libraries’ services, collections, and facilities. These improvements in physical space and access hours address issues raised in a recent patron satisfaction survey, and we will continue to solicit feedback from our user community to ensure that we provide the highest level of service while the Libraries and the campus grow and change.
