The Libraries are pleased to announce that the research collections will be enhanced by  generous gifts from two outstanding Orange County donors.

Irene Salinger

Irene Saltern Salinger has established The Salinger Family Library Endowed Fund. Mrs. Salinger lives in Newport Beach and actively supports a variety of philanthropies from the field of medicine to the arts, both at UCI and in the community. She emigrated to the United States from Berlin and had a long and distinguished career as a fashion designer who had screen credit on 38 movies. “Irene’s gift is a significant investment in the vitality of our research collections,” said University Librarian Gerry Munoff, “and further enhances the quality of faculty research and student academic achievement across the entire campus.

The purpose of the Salinger Family Fund is to support the Libraries’ general research collections. Mrs. Salinger has a keen interest in the acquisition of materials in the areas of eye research and world peace.  “I am delighted to establish this fund as a tribute to my family,” said Mrs. Salinger, “and to demonstrate my strong belief in the value of learning and research for the benefit of society.”

Carole Bailey

UCI alumna Carole Bailey has established The Carole Creek Bailey Library Endowed Fund, which will provide support for future generations of students and scholars by strengthening the collections in the Social Sciences and History. Bailey, an Irvine resident since 1975, received her B.A. in Social Sciences in 1974 and has been active with the Libraries in a variety of ways ever since.

“As a UCI student in 1973-74, I spent many hours in the Langson (then Main) Library using items from the collections as well as the study rooms that were available. As a working single parent, I introduced my daughter Gail to the library in order for her to fulfill assignments for her research papers. As a now-retired senior citizen, I take a great deal of pleasure in continuing to use the UCI Libraries, and I am pleased to be able to make a financial contribution to its continued success.”

“It is particularly gratifying that an alumna recognizes and supports the central role the Libraries play at UCI,” said Munoff. “We are also pleased that Carole is encouraging her family to make donations to the Bailey endowment on her behalf, anticipating that over time this will add significantly to its impact on library resources.”

These wonderful gifts were made in response to the Libraries’ Building Collections of Excellence Initiative, which focuses on building both the quantity and quality of the collections to meet the research and instructional needs of the growing UCI campus.
