Gelfand Gift Supports Digitization of Important Oral Histories
A generous gift by Julia Gelfand, Applied Sciences and Engineering Librarian, and her husband David Lang will make possible the digitization of a large number of important oral histories for UC Irvine's 50th anniversary celebration in 2015.
“We are thrilled to support this oral history digitization project and do so in honor of our current University Librarian Lorelei Tanji, and the extraordinary faculty and graduates of UCI,” said Gelfand. “We have lived in Orange County for nearly 35 years and keenly observed and participated as the campus has evolved. Preservation and conservation of our resources is central to our mission as our users are the global citizens of the world interested in how this gem of a university matured so quickly. The oral histories conducted with its pioneers are something of great pride to share locally and globally.”
“I am delighted with Julia and Dave’s support which allows us to move forward with this exciting project to digitize interviews with key players in UCI’s history,” said University Librarian Lorelei Tanji. “As a result, the campus and community will have greater access to a robust account of the influence of these important pioneers.”
The digitized oral histories will be housed in the Libraries’ Online Archive of UCI History, which was created to support UCI’s 50th anniversary. The growing archive makes accessible the historical developments that have made UCI so special, focusing on its pioneering intellectual contributions, key turning points, and unique directions.
