An important library initiative to document the history of Orange County’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) communities was the subject of a special event held on November 15th in the Caroline A. Laudati Conference Room in Langson Library.  The event highlighted the UCI Libraries' LGBT Archive and ongoing efforts to preserve, grow and make available these historically significant materials for scholarly research.

40 campus and community members heard a presentation on the purpose and goals for the LGBT Archive by Michelle Light, Head of Special Collections and Archives and remarks from Barbara Muirhead and Brad Brafford, LGBT activitists who helped establish it at the UCI Libraries with financial support and donations of materials.

Attendees had the opportunity to view the exhibit, LGBT Communities in Orange County: Highlights from the Archival Collections, which is on display in the Special Collections and Archives lobby in Langson Library until December 14, and view additional materials in the Special Collections & Archives Reading Room.

Barbara Muirhead became involved with preserving LGBT Orange County history when she started the OC Historical Timeline Project in 1995, in collaboration with Dick Hitt. Brad Brafford, a gay rights activist and founder of the Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center of Orange County (The Center OC), contributed files to the archive that document gay and lesbian political advocacy from 1972 to the mid-1990s.

Guests received a copy of the LGBT Archive brochure and were encouraged to help raise awareness and donate materials and financial support.  For further information about the LGBT Archive and how to support it, please click on the tabs below or contact Julie Sully, Interim Director of Development, at 949.824.4658 or jsully@uci.edu.

History helps us understand ourselves and how the society we live in today came to be.  By preserving the voices of LGBT communities in their own words, we ensure that future generations have access to a diverse historical record.  The history of the LGBT communities in Orange County is rich, but not adequately documented.

The UCI Libraries LGBT Archive preserves the historical records of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) communities in Orange County. The public is welcome to consult the materials in the Special Collections and Archives Reading Room. Some materials are also available online.

The Libraries seek donations of materials that document LGBT communities in Orange County.  We are especially interested in materials concerning the activities of local organizations, businesses, individuals, and events.  Please contact Special Collections & Archives at spcoll@uci.edu for more information about how you can help.
