Donating Materials to the UCI Libraries

The UCI Libraries research collections have been enhanced over the years by gifts of books and other materials from generous donors in the University and the general community. The UC Irvine Libraries has created some general guidelines for individuals interesting in donating materials.

Thank you for your consideration and support of the UC Irvine Libraries!

The UCI Libraries considers donations of materials which meet the education, scholarship, patient care, and research needs of the University.

Individuals interested in donating materials are encouraged to drop their materials off at any public service point in any of the library buildings, see http://www.lib.uci.edu/about/visit/locations.html. If you have a donation that requires assistance, please contact Meera Balachandra, Gift Assistant, (949) 824-4987.

The UCI Libraries are unable to accept donations of outdated textbooks, trade hardback and paperbacks or materials in poor physical condition. Journals will be accepted only if they fill collection needs. Your local public library is a great organization to consider for these donations. Visit http://www.ocpl.org to find a local library in your area.

When UCI Libraries accepts gifts of materials, it is with the condition that the donation might not be added to the collections. In most instances the UCI Libraries are unable to return donations. However, donations not added to the collection are used to support our collections through annual book sales, and are equally appreciated!

Due to space restrictions the UCI Libraries staff may ask to accept only select items from large potential donations.

Donors offering materials in areas of special interest or rare books will be referred to an appropriate subject specialist for further consultation to ensure the material is appropriate for acceptance.

A form acknowledging the donor and size of donation is provided to the donor at all public service points.

The University of California is prohibited by law from assigning a value to gifts-in-kind for tax purposes. The library cannot supply a list of titles donated unless special arrangements are made in advance.

Donors are encouraged to always consult with their tax and/or legal advisors, and tax return preparer, to determine the value of their donation for tax purposes (if desired). An official UC Irvine gift receipt is sent to the donor by UCI's Office of Gift and Trust Administration only if the donation is of value. Please contact Julie Sully, Associate Director of Development (949) 824-4658, if you would like more information on this process.

Gift materials can be plated in honor or memory of an individual with an additional monetary gift to the UCI Libraries. Please contact Julie Sully, Interim Director of Development (949) 824-4658, if you would like more information on this special opportunity.
